Writer's Workshop
Mini Lesson 10-15 minutes
Independent Writing Time 35 minutes
Share Time 10 minutes
Mini-Lesson: A mini-lesson is a focus lesson that is about 10-15 minutes and may be procedural, literal/craft, or strategy/skill lessons for writing. Often times, we will use a book that demonstrates a craft or skill that we are learning. The teacher may also model a specific strategy or the class may edit or write a piece interactively.
Independent Writing: During our independent writing time, the lights will be dimmed, classical music will play in the background, and students will be in their writing bubble; the whole class will be writing independently. This is a time for students to apply the strategies learned during mini-lessons and small group lessons.
Conferring:
While students are writing independently, the teacher will be conferring with students.
Each conference is about 5-10 minutes and I use a conferring notebook to record all of my conferences with my students. This notebook has a tab for each student which contains a goal, dates of meetings, my observations, and my teaching points for that meeting.
Share Time: Share time is when the class comes back together and students share the strategies they used during independent writing time or share their reflections/understandings gained about new strategies.
